Most dentists recommend changing your toothbrush every three months.
The United States (2019) has an estimated 327.2 million people.
If 327.2 million people change their toothbrush every three months, we are putting 1,308,800,000 toothbrushes in landfills each year. That's over ONE BILLION toothbrushes that will end up in a landfill in the United States alone.
Did you know?
It takes approximately 400 years for one plastic toothbrush to decompose.
In 400 years that is approximately 523,520,000,000 in just the United States!
Oh, but you use an electric toothbrush, and you think it's less waste?
Even if you use a rechargeable toothbrush eventually the battery will need to be replaced. If you actually replace the battery and don't throw away the entire contraption, the old battery still ends up in a landfill. That battery will leak toxins into the environment, eventually leaking into nearby waterways harming both the animals and environment.
I know, it's just a toothbrush. In comparison to the massive amount of waste we produce every year it is just a small piece of the pie. However, if 327.2 million people each make one small change, that equates to one big reduction of waste as a whole.
Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world; because of this, it is a sustainable resource an an excellent alternative to plastic. Bamboo toothbrushes are also antimicrobial, helping to avoid nasty bacteria. Use your toothbrush for three months, bury it in the yard and let nature take its course.
